One of my favourite parts of wedding planning is helping you to choose the theme and colour scheme for your special day! It’s a big decision to make, but choosing the right theme can help to create the perfect atmosphere and help you to really personalise your wedding and make it synonymous to you. Take some time to think about the things that represent you as a couple and not necessarily things that are “on-trend”. And don’t be afraid of what other people will think- the day is about you, what you love, and celebrating your love for one another.
Your theme will set the tone and mood for the day and will influence every aspect of your wedding- the other pieces of the puzzle, such as stationary, flowers, wedding party attire and other decorative aspects will then fall into place. So, it’s a great idea to think about this one early on, to create a beautiful, cohesive and consistent aesthetic throughout.
So, for a helping hand to finding your unique wedding design and to help you develop your wedding theme & colour scheme, I’ve put together some ideas and top tips to help you narrow down the choice!
Some colours naturally lend themselves to certain seasons, so it’s important to consider the season when you’re choosing your wedding theme and colour scheme. Rich, jewel tones or frosted accents compliment the colder seasons, whilst brighter, bolder colours will suit the warmer months. For a year-round palette, soft pastels and dusky pinks can be used for any season!
Summer weddings with warmer temperatures and colourful accents, can always suit an outdoor wedding, whilst a winter wedding would lend it self to a cosy manor house with a roaring open fire. The season can impact many, if not all aspects of your wedding, from the venue, to the flowers, the menu and even the wedding party attire, so consider how you imaging your big day and match this to the most suitable season.
The season can even be the theme itself! Look at seasonal details to find inspiration for your theme.
Firstly, simply think about the colours that appeal to you. What colours are present when you image your big day? Think about your wedding date and as I've a;ready mentioned, reflect the colours of the season in your wedding scheme- the season and your colour scheme undoubtably go hand in hand. Make sure that your chosen colour scheme compliments your wedding venue too.
Don’t be afraid to be a little selfish and choose a colour that suits you! - it is after all your day, so make sure your colour choice compliments you (and your bridal party), to make sure you capture the very best (and most aesthetically pleasing!) photos. Take a look at your wardrobe and see what colours your wear, or pieces that you gravitate towards- this is one way give you an idea of the colours and shades that you both find appealing.
Once you’ve picked your base colour, think about the colours that will complement it- you could opt for bold, contrasting colours of softer complimentary hues. Either way, adding complementary colours to your base colour, will add some variety and depth to your colour scheme, and give dimension to your décor.
Some themes can prove more expensive than others- if you need to hire props and decorations to make your theme work, it may not be achievable for a lower-budget Wedding. Conversely, if your theme can be created yourselves with minimal cost, then it may be much more achievable. Think about what you would need to create the right vibe for your wedding theme and check that this fits with your budget, otherwise, let your budget guide you when selecting your wedding venue, theme and decorations.
Your wedding theme and your wedding venue absolutely need to complement each other, to create a really cohesive aesthetic. So, consider your surroundings and think about what will work in that space. If you have a “blank canvas” wedding venue, such as a marquee or other neutral space, then the world is your oyster. However, for any venue with existing decoration or characteristic decor, you want to be sure to compliment and not to clash.
You’ll want your personality to shine through on your wedding day, so you’ll want your theme to reflect who you are as a couple- so make sure that your wedding theme echoes who you are and what you love. Your theme should be recognised by your guests and be a translation of the both of you- you want everyone in the room to say “that’s so them!”. So, think about your hobbies, your interests, and what you enjoy doing as a couple. Think about what you like most and base your theme around what you enjoy.
Add some personal touches to your wedding to keep it a true reflection of you, whether it’s cultural traditions, or a love of cars- don’t go overboard, but adding smalls details that remind everyone of the two of you, will make for a really memorable day. The result will be a unique aesthetic and will pay homage to your heritage and the things that you love.
Think about how formal you want your wedding to be, as this can impact the theme that you choose- for example, if you want a glamorous, back-tie Wedding, you’re not going to want a festival marquee. Your dress code and the formality of your wedding can impact the vibe of the entire day, so let your concepts of formality guide you to create your theme.
And if you plan a dress code, think about how you are as a couple- choose your dress code based on your natural style, whether it’s always on trend or a more laid-back approach. Chances are this will feed into your wedding day attire and will consequently echo in your theme and dress code. But if you do plan a dress code, make sure you tell your guests well in advance to give them every opportunity to join in!
