At a recent training event held by @Bernadette Chapman we were encouraged to think about choosing a word for the year. The idea being that it will help bring focus to our lives and our work; to keep us on track for the coming year. As is true with many things in life, trying to think of an answer there and then, on the spot, is almost impossible! I wrote a few words down that came to mind with the intention of coming back to it later… but honestly not totally buying into the concept. Bernadette assured us that with some time and contemplation it would become clear…. And it just so happened that later that day, it came to me like an epiphany!
It’s a word that I’ve used so much recently with my wedding couples but also a word that resonates with me on so many levels, at this point in my life.
Something I explain to all of my wedding couples is that planning your wedding is as much about the journey as it is about the day itself- I believe it’s true in life as a whole. The journey; how you get there; your experiences along the way; the knowledge you gain; the bonds you create are so often just as important (if not more important!) as the destination. When you’re planning a wedding, the time that you spend together as a couple, making decisions together; discussing and compromising to find the balance between you; creating a unified dream, is a wonderful experience that can solidify a bond and set a solid foundation for a wonderful future together.
From a personal perspective my journey to create a wedding planning business, was one that started long before I became a wedding planner! Years of training & experience in project management led to a solid foundation of excellent planning practices, that in many years’ time would create the foundation of a successful wedding planning business- yet without that journey, the experiences that I had & the connections that I made, I wouldn’t be in a position to offer the services that I do today. And that journey continues still- there is always more to learn, new skills to acquire, new connections to make in order to continually grow and improve myself, to become an even better.
At home, we’re at the end stages of a major rebuild of our family home- now that’s been a journey that I’m not intending to repeat, with some highs but some major lows (no heating or hot water in freezing conditions was a big low!). And yet having experienced those times, I can safely say I have learnt a lot and look forward to continuing my journey to create a home that I love once more. But did I learn from it… absolutely, and did the experience bond us together as a family- definitely (if we got through that, we can get through pretty much anything!). Was it worth it, now that it’s (almost!) completed? Yes, I think so! Now I’m looking forward to continuing the journey and making our house a home. From an emotional perspective, it’s been a challenging year, my youngest starting school, building works that didn’t go to plan, not having the time to focus on the things that mattered, to do the things that I enjoy… the last year has been challenging! But my aim for 2025 is to start a journey to a better me- to take better care of myself, spend more time with my family and find my balance once more. It’s not something that’s going to happen over night- indeed it will probably take me all year. But it’s an essential journey that I’m keen to take, to find me again.
