How to plan the perfect confetti shot

How to plan the perfect confetti shot

10 October 2024

Whether you choose traditional paper confetti or natural petal confetti, you’re guaranteed some fantastic photos on your wedding day, if you choose to include a confetti throw.

Dial up the fun as family and friends, literally shower you with their love, and create some wonderful memories to treasure from your wedding day.

Here are a few of my top tips to help you create the perfect confetti shot on the day:

  • Check with your venue that you’re allowed to throw confetti… not all venues allow it.
  • Steer clear of non-biodegradable and plastic confetti… a big no go.
  • Choose which type of confetti you want (check with your venue as there may be some rules on this)- generally your options are traditional paper confetti, natural petals or biodegradable confetti.
A note about the types- paper confetti is gorgeous and falls at the perfect rate, but beware of any gusts of wind that could blow it the wrong direction! With natural petal confetti, be sure your petals aren’t too small or they’ll get lost in the photos. Also be cautious with any dyed tissue or petal confetti as they may not be colour fast when wet and there is a risk of staining your dress.
  • Keep confetti throwing to good weather, to avoid complications such as staining and colour fastness! Plus, it’s just a lot more fun!
  • Supply your own- this way you’re guaranteed there will be enough & it will be the right colour!
  • On the point of colour, try to have your confetti match your colour scheme. If you can keep your confetti colours on theme, though don’t make the colours too pale as they can get lost in the photos.
  • If you’re opting for the petal/flower route, aim for larger petals as they will show up more in the photos and will fall at a slower pace, making it easier to capture.
  • Make sure you have enough for everyone to have a couple of big handfuls each… then a bit more! There’s no such thing as too much, when it comes to confetti shots at a wedding, so the more you have the better!
  • Choose your moment- throwing confetti can naturally happen at multiple points throughout the day. These are some of my favourites: at the end of the ceremony as the couple regress down the aisle; as the couple exit the ceremony room; as the couple enter the reception or during the first dance. Plan out your day and see where the moment fits best in your schedule, as well as in your venue space.
  • Think about how you want your guests to stand for your confetti shot- your options are generally with your guests surrounding you in a group or in a line creating a tunnel. Theres no right or wrong and its 100% up to personal preference, but it’s a great idea to have it planned in advance and suitable for the time of day.
  • As guests remember to throw up and over- not at the couple! You want the confetti tumbling over their heads, not hitting them in the face!
  • As the couple, remember to look forward, at your guests or of course at each other. Don’t walk too fast and enjoy yourselves!
  • If you’re looking for an alternative to confetti, but still want the shot, why not consider bubbles, ribbon wands, flags, or paper aeroplanes for a fun alternative.
