Christmas Weddings
7th December 2024

Are you planning a winter wedding for 2024, 2025 or beyond? Then, why not go all out and host a cosy Christmas Wedding? There are some great advantages to styling your Wedding with a Christmas theme, especially if you plan to decorate your venue yourselves. You can have so much fun by embracing the Christmas season. Here are some crack(er)ing ideas to get you started on your way to planning the perfect Christmas Wedding!

Firstly, think about your Wedding Venue- you need to have a beautiful Winter Wedding Venue- some venues just lend themselves perfectly to a Christmas Wedding. Look out for open fireplaces, countryside with lots of trees and a cosy atmosphere, to create the perfect, enchanted Christmas Wedding.

Colour Scheme

Choosing the right colour scheme can really give your Wedding the perfect Christmas accents- and with such an array of festive options available, there’s sure to be one to suit your style. But be sure to consider your venue- make sure that your colour scheme works well with your surroundings, to create the festive atmosphere that you’re looking for. The traditional Christmas colour schemes are tried and tested and work really well for Christmas Weddings, ranging from warming burgundy and forest green with a hint of gold, to frosty white and glittering silver. But there are now so many options for Christmas colour schemes, the world is your oyster! For some contemporary alternatives, think burgundy & copper, icy blue & white, navy & rose, plum & emerald, black & gold, silver & sage and jewel tones such as red & purple. Be creative and find a Christmas colour combination that works for you.

Décor

Your colour scheme will really set off your venue décor and now is the time to go to town with a variety of Christmas themed decorations. Christmas is a time to sparkle; think about decorating your venue with everything from baubles, to glitter. For some rustic charm, use pinecones, logs, foliage and dried fruit for a great, natural and low-cost option. But, whatever you do, don’t forget the candles and fairy lights, to give your room a romantic, Christmas glow- this is one time when more is definitely more! Do however check with your venue before committing to too many candles- fairy lights or electric tealights can be a great alternative!

If you’re lucky enough to be married in a venue with a big fireplace, decorate the hearth sympathetically- it will be a great focal point for your guests as they warm themselves by the fire. For a more playful effect, why not hang personalised stockings for your Wedding party above the fireplace- it will make for some great photo opportunities! Other quirky, Christmas themed ideas are styling your Wedding Card and gift box as a Santa post-box or creating your table plan to look like a giant advent calendar!

If you want to go all-out Christmas, then why not fill your space with Christmas trees?! Either decorating with colour-themed baubles or simply frosting with white lights, can create an elegant and sophisticated effect. And what says Christmas more than a wreath? Hang them everywhere from doors, to walls, to windows or use them as a natural photo prop for you and your guests. Tie them in with your colour theme to draw your Wedding theme and colour scheme together.

Matching your table décor, such as table runners and napkins to your colour theme, is also a great way to draw your theme together and enhance the Christmas atmosphere. But whether you choose a winter wonderland or a warm and cosy theme, you can be sure to create a beautiful Christmas ambiance.

Flowers

Christmas bouquets traditionally include deep velvety red roses combined with red winter berries, fir and eucalyptus. But why not mix your floral décor with a variety of Christmas decorations to add some Christmas glitz and a sophisticated sparkle to your Christmas Wedding bouquet. For some added rustic charm, include holly (though watch out for the prickles) hypericum berries and pinecones. Make sure the Groomsmen’s button holes are equally Christmassey, with a sprig of holly, mistletoe, thistle or the addition of a small pine cone, to add a festive twist.

Sprigs of mistletoe or delicate succulents, layered with holly and fir can create beautiful aisle decorations and venue décor- add some lanterns for an elegant effect. Don’t underestimate the impact of foliage – well arranged greenery can have a simple yet sophisticated effect, and create a very festive, eye-catching display. In fact, strategically adding mistletoe around your venue creates a lovely extra Christmas romance to your Christmas Wedding day! For a pop of colour consider using amaryllis and poinsettias, which will be in season at Christmas time and would be a striking addition to your table décor.

Wedding Stationary

Your Wedding invites will be the first hint of your Wedding theme to your guests, so think about incorporating a festive design into your Wedding stationary and really get the Christmas theme started for your festive Wedding. Think about adding snowflakes, berries or wreaths for a sophisticated nod to the Christmas season. Consider too adding some velvet ribbon in Christmas tones or tie holly, mistletoe, ivy or fir to your menus and place cards to add an extra splash of berry and green to your table decor.

Place Settings & Favours

Pine cones make the perfect card holders for place names and table numbers, but perhaps my favourite idea is using personalised baubles for your place settings. These can double-up as Wedding favours for your guests to take home and have on their own Christmas tree - every year your guests will have a great reminder of your beautiful Christmas wedding. Tie some colour themed ribbon to create a cohesive scheme. Some other great alternatives for place settings are, tangerines, clementines or pomegranates for a jewel-colour themed Wedding, alternatively opt for dried orange slices, or limes, combined with cinnamon sticks for a fragrant and festive touch.

Traditional Christmas treats are sure to be a hit with your guests and make great Wedding favours. Gingerbread, iced biscuits, stollen and mince pies are all great options for a sweet treat to take home. Candy canes again, can double as a name card and Wedding favour and are a beautiful yet simple Christmas touch. A little winter warming tipple is also a great idea- consider drinks you only ever seem to find at Christmas, such as Amaretto, Advocaat, Eggnog, Spiced Rum and Winter Pimms. Hot Chocolate jars are a great non-alcoholic winter warmer, that your guests will love to take home.

For a non-edible option, consider a jingle-bell with matching colour-themed ribbon- a sophisticated & elegant alternative to again combine you name cards and Wedding favours.

Festive scented candles are a great option- look for scents such as cinnamon, orange, cranberry, pine, cherry & clove. Let them take some winter wonderland magic home with them. Or simply stick with the traditional cracker- these can also double as wedding favours and place cards- with the bonus of a compulsory crown… which will be great for the photos! What ever you choose, consider wrapping your wedding favours, so everyone has their own little Christmas present to take home!

Dress Code

Have you thought about implementing a Christmas dress code for your Wedding? - strictly glitz and glamour… and avoiding the Christmas jumpers!

For pre-Wedding preparations, why not swap out your bridal party dressing gowns for some Christmas inspired, cosy, plaid shirts for your bridesmaids. They will keep you all warm and in the Christmas spirit as you prepare for the big day. Consider too, the temperature outside and perhaps opt for long sleeved dresses for the day- there are some beautiful options available at this time of year. Think about addaing a faux fur stole, jacket or even a cape to keep warm. Choose Bridesmaids dresses in colours to complement your Christmas theme and accessorise with some sparkles to bring some shimmering Christmas spirit to your party.

For the groomsmen, a classic tuxedo will always look chic at a Christmas wedding, but you could also consider velvet suits in tones of burgundy, navy or bottle green for a cosy Christmas feel whilst keeping the men looking dapper.

Wedding Cake

There are so many ways to create the perfect Christmas themed cake for your wedding, whether you choose some traditional Christmas flavours, or choose to decorate with a Christmas theme in mind. Christmas themed wedding cakes are all about style and sophistication- consider decorating with shimmering metallics, on-theme florals and incorporating English berries for an elegant and delicious combination, to tantalise the senses. If cake isn’t your thing, why not have a gingerbread house as a cake alternative?

Christmas Wedding Food & Drinks Ideas

Warming mulled wine and cider are great reception drink options for a Christmas Wedding, but if you prefer a glass of Champagne, why not consider adding some winter berries for a festive twist. Christmas cocktails are another great option, but for a non-alcoholic option, consider a hot chocolate bar.

Why not add a Christmas twist to your Wedding breakfast too, with a winter warmer soup for starters and roast turkey with all the trimmings for the main event. Alternatively consider a wholesome, warming meal to reflect the season and keep your guests full and cosy! Traditional Christmas pudding and mince pies could finish off your Christmas Wedding breakfast, or for a Christmassey alternative how about yule log, sticky toffee pudding or ‘bauble’ profiteroles? A warming, hearty meal will be appreciated by your guests on a cold winters’ day, especially if you chose a historical venue, which can be prone to being a little chilly in the Winter months.

You could create a Christmas market for your evening buffet, with a warm pretzel stand, roasted chestnuts, warm sausages and mugs of mulled wine to keep any chills at bay during the evenings entertainment.

Christmas Entertainment

Talking about entertainment, have you thought about how you plan to entertain your guests during your Christmas Wedding?

It’s unlikely that your guests will be taking a stroll through the gardens on a Winters’ afternoon, so why not make the day feel extra cosy and Christmassey and encourage everyone to join in with some Christmas carolling… or if you prefer slightly less audience participation, why not hire a professional carol singer to add some Christmas joy!

Ask your DJ to include some Christmas hits to the evening’s playlist to keep the festive fun going through the night.

You could even have a surprise visit from Santa... which your younger guests will adore!

Whatever you choose to make your Winter Wonderland Wedding a Cosy Christmas delight, have fun and enjoy the festive season but most of all have a magnificent and memorable Wedding!
