Book in Plenty of Time – How much is plenty of time? As soon as you have booked your venue and confirmed your Wedding date. Top Wedding cake designers are taking bookings up to two years in advance and have limited availability (especially for weekends in peak Wedding season) so book early to avoid disappointment. Don’t worry if you aren’t entirely sure what you want at this point, every cake designer will have their own rules of engagement, however, you should be able to secure your date with a deposit and the design details can be confirmed closer to your special day. All we need to provide an initial estimate is your Wedding date, venue, number of guests and a basic idea of style e.g. Fondant/buttercream etc. Again, if you aren’t sure, your cake designer can advise on this point.
Set a Budget – Whilst there may be some flexibility in your budget, it’s good to have an idea of what you’re comfortable spending. Most cake designers will have a minimum spend so it’s important to do that initial research to make sure you’re a good fit. Most cake designers will have a price guide on their website, so this is a great place to start if you have no idea how to budget for a cake. Every couple knows the level of importance they place on the cake, you may sit in the “all I care about is cake” category or you may be in the “I don’t really like cake but that’s what you do at Weddings” category. Whichever camp you fall in, this does not change the time, effort, passion and skill that goes into creating a Wedding cake, in other words, your opinion of cake won’t affect the price, so perhaps don’t mention this to your cake designer. (You’ll be amazed at some of the comments I’ve received… but that’s another story!)
Think Beyond the Cake – Nobody puts baby in the corner and in this scenario when we say baby we mean your beautiful cake! Far too often cakes are displayed on a plain table and placed in the corner of the room. You spend all this time and money designing a spectacular cake only for them to be hidden out of view or be placed in a less than spectacular fashion. Speak to your cake designer about how to enhance your cake design, this can include cake stands, plinths, flowers (which can be repurposed from your ceremony), candles and drapes to name a few. The possibilities are endless, and your cake will thank you!
Trust your Cake Designer – You’ve done the research, you’ve spent countless hours scrolling through Instagram/Pinterest, sent off several enquiries and maybe even had consultations with multiple designers only to have landed on your designer of choice! Finding the perfect designer for you should mean you fully trust them with your cake design, you can of course be involved as much or as little as you like but give them the creative freedom to create something unique to you. After spending time with you and learning what you like as a couple, that paired with your images of inspiration and their knowledge of the latest cake design techniques, you may be surprised that they may know what you want better than you do!
Eat Cake! – Now for the best bit, time to sample cake! Not only should a Wedding cake look amazing, but it should taste amazing too! This may be something you want to do before securing your cake designer with a deposit or something you are happy to do after. This is totally up to you and how confident you feel. Most cake designers now offer postal sample boxes that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home. (Cake delivered straight to your door, what could be better, are we right?!) A good Wedding cake designer’s cakes WILL taste as good as they look so don’t settle for anything less. Dry or dense, keep looking or keep tasting should we say!
